Risky Buildings
Introduction
The List

Today, many important buildings of the twentieth century are not only neglected and unappreciated, but are severely decaying and under serious threat of being demolished. The majority of these buildings are made from concrete. Crumbling and stained, they lack the romance of polished marble or rough-hewn stone. Desolate car parks and redundant shopping centres seldom attract the sympathy and support of the public, despite being of potentially great architectural importance.

The Twentieth Century Society campaigns for the protection of Britain’s best architecture, from 1914 onwards. To mark the 25th anniversary of the Society, we have chosen some of Britain’s best buildings under threat. This website showcases such well known structures as the Renault Factory by Sir Norman Foster and the Dudley Zoo by Tecton. But we also pay attention to buildings hardly mentioned in the media or architectural histories; this site features a waste incinerator as well as a lift testing tower and a former Catholic seminary. The buildings are arranged by type and give an overview of the history and the current status of each case.

The aim of the website is to encourage interest and support for these urgent cases. If you want to help save these buildings or find a new use for them, contact us on 0207 250 3857 or caseworker@c20society.org.uk.
